Front 5 Building first LEED-NC in Idaho
BOISE, IDAHO, Mar. 14 -/E-Wire/-- cole + poe architects, P.A. is excited to announce that the U.S. Green Building Council has Certified the Front 5 Building under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System®. This distinctive renovated warehouse adapted for office use in downtown Boise is the first building in Idaho to achieve LEED for New Construction (LEED-NC) Certification.
LEED-NC provides new construction and major remodeling projects a set of environmentally conscious and high performance building standards. LEED-NC Certification means the 16,500sf Front 5 Building met the site, water efficiency, energy efficiency, responsible use of materials and resources, improved indoor environmental quality and innovation and design process requirements.
"Our goal was to design a space that would make a statement that sustainable design can be attractive, forward thinking and most of all practical," says Stan Cole, Principal Architect and one of five LEED Accredited Professionals at cole + poe architects.
Specific examples of the LEED credits achieved include:
-Building reuse of 76% of the original 1970s building shell. -HVAC systems are 25% more energy efficient over a standard building. -Use of highly reflective roofing material reduces heat-island effects and improves energy efficiency. -Daylight and views provided to over 75% of all indoor spaces. -Extensive use of construction materials with recycled content and from local and/or regional sources. -Resource reuse of unique 10' long Douglas Fir beams found in the existing warehouse that were creatively reused in the construction of the mezzanine areas.
The building is designed to reduce maintenance costs, improve productivity of it occupants and benefit the Boise community through urban redevelopment and environmental awareness.
The building won the Idaho Smart Growth "Grow Smart" Award and Intermountain Contractor's Best of 2005 Silver Awards for the categories of Best Architectural Design and Best Remodel. The Urban Land Institute completed a case study of the building in the summer of 2005.
cole + poe architects continues to lead the sustainable design effort in Idaho. The firm also completed the LEED for Existing Buildings Silver Certification of the Ada County Courthouse and Administration Buildingâthe first LEED Certified building in the state. The firm's other sustainable projects include the Premier/TitleOne Building, an office building targeting LEED for Core and Shell and the Boise WaterShed, an environmental interpretive center targeting LEED-NC Silver.
