FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton to Honor Private Conservation During Second Annual Private Conservation Day, Thursday, April 12th

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, Apr. 10 -/E-Wire/-- In a speech emphasizing the true diversity of visions and approaches in environmental protection, particularly within the private sector, the Honorable Gale Norton, Secretary of the Interior, will commemorate private land stewardship during this year's "Private Conservation Day" Thursday, April 12th. The event, scheduled to take place at the National Press Club in the Holeman Lounge at 10 a.m., is sponsored by the Center for Private Conservation.

Secretary Norton believes there is a real need to change the tone previous administrations have taken towards conserving and protecting the environment. She recently stated she hopes to "foster a new culture of communication [and] cooperation; a culture of consultation¾all to serve the cause of conservation." CPC's event will be highlighted with Secretary Norton presenting the 2001 "Private Conservationist of the Year" award to a small tree farmer whose vision and hard work transformed an ordinary tree farm into a model for tree farmers everywhere.

"Building on America's unique tradition of voluntary association and private initiatives, we look forward to a productive relationship with Secretary Norton, which will serve to encourage, not restrain, private conservation efforts worldwide," says Robert J. Smith, CPC's Senior Environmental Scholar. Other guest speakers include:
