FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Cyanotech Begins New Clinical Evaluation for BioAstin: Antioxidant Supplement for Sunburn Protection

KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII, Apr. 10 -/E-Wire/-- Cyanotech Corporation (Nasdaq NMS: CYAN), the world's leader in producing high-value, natural products from microalgae, has initiated a new clinical evaluation of BioAstin(TM) to measure its effectiveness for providing sunscreen protection from ultraviolet light. The study is being conducted by a consumer products testing company headquartered in New Jersey.

The active ingredient in BioAstin, natural astaxanthin, has been shown to be a potent antioxidant over 500 times stronger than vitamin E and 10 times stronger than beta carotene. Astaxanthin has also been shown to enhance and modulate the immune system. These effects in combination or separately may reduce the acute inflammation reaction of the skin and tissue just beneath the skin that follows excessive exposure to UV radiation, which leads to sunburn.

"The potential of BioAstin to retard and prevent sunburn by ultraviolet light is highly significant,' said Gerald R. Cysewski, Ph.D., chairman, president and CEO. "If BioAstin is proven to act effectively as a systemic sunscreen, it could benefit a large number of persons in a $500-million market.'

Cyanotech has filed four U.S. patent applications for BioAstin based on the protective properties of astaxanthin. Two clinical trials are currently underway: one assessing BioAstin's effectiveness for reducing delayed onset muscle soreness after strenuous exercise, and the other for relief of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Cyanotech Corporation, the world's leader in microalgae technology, produces high-value natural products from microalgae, and is the world's largest commercial producer of natural astaxanthin (pronounced "asta-zan-thin') from microalgae. Products include BioAstin(TM) natural astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant with expanding applications as a human nutraceutical; NatuRose® natural astaxanthin for the aquaculture and animal feed industry; Spirulina Pacifica®, a nutrient-rich dietary supplement; and phycobiliproteins, which are fluorescent pigments used in the immunological diagnostics market. Spirulina Pacifica and BioAstin are sold directly online through www.nutrex-hawaii.com and through resellers worldwide. Corporate and product information is available at www.cyanotech.com
