FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Upcoming Ecosphere Conference to Focus on Sustainable Environments

LINCON, NEBRASKA, Apr. 12 -/E-Wire/-- Registration is now available for Ecospheres, an international conference and forum that targets the connections and relationships between the issues of land, water, populations and culture, technology and the environment. Please visit our website: www.unl.edu/ecospheres.

The conference will take place June 10-13, 2001 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Lincoln, Nebraska. Ecospheres is sponsored by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Omaha-based Joslyn Castle Institute for Sustainable Communities. The primary objectives for the conference include: 1) building awareness of the issues and interdependencies of land, water and populations, 2) providing the attendees with foundations for public policy to support sustainability, and 3) providing youth with an opportunity to help determine the direction for a sustainable future.

The final day of Ecospheres will provide conference participants with an opportunity to discuss issues and concerns of local and regional importance. It is planned that these issues can be addressed in a way that integrates economic interests with environmental, social and cultural considerations, and the influence of technology within a policy framework. The main focus will be on Nebraska and The Great Plains, yet the Nebraska Preferred Future strategy for the workshop is transferable to any region in the country, so it is encouraged that all conferees attend. If desired, arrangements can be made so that people from regions other than The Great Plains can join together and discuss the issues relevant to their particular geographic region.

Speakers at the three-and-half day conference include Roger Kennedy, former director of the National Park Service; Lester Brown, chairman of the Worldwatch Institute; Sonia Davila-Poblete, Mexican Institute for Water Technology, and Werner Fornos, president of The Population Institute. Other featured keynote speakers include Daniel Botkin, president of The Center for the Study of the Environment; Susan Seacrest, president of The Groundwater Foundation; Stephen Millett, Battelle Corporation, and Richard Swett, U.S. Ambassador to Denmark.

Registration is available on-line or by calling the Division of Continuing Studies (UNL) at (402) 472-2175. Ecospheres is offering a limited number of need-based scholarships for individuals who wish to attend the program. Each scholarship recipient will be awarded complimentary full registration. E-mail your request for application materials to [REDACTED-EMAIL]. Additional conference information is also available on the web at: www.unl.edu/ecospheres.
