Tamalpais Timberworks Introduces New Concept in Self-Assembled Natural Furniture
Affordable, Elegant and Earth-Friendly
-- Designed to last a Lifetime --
-- Simple Construction Guarantees Quick Building Success --
SAN RAFAEL, CALIFORNIA, Apr. 18 -/E-Wire/-- Tamalpais TimberWorks is excited to honor Earth Day by introducing a new line of natural furniture kits for the growing community of individuals who love nature, are concerned about its on-going destruction, and value high quality. Called BYO(TM) natural furniture, standing for "build-your-own," the line from this Marin, California based company is designed to offer affordable and eco-friendly furniture-building kits for both time, tools, and skills-constrained individuals, and those who wish to do some or all of the woodwork. The kits are of the highest quality, yet are affordably priced. Initially, kits will be available for building tables, beds and benches.
At the heart of the BYO natural furniture kits is a simple and unique metal fastening device, designed by Tamalpais TimberWorks, called an ArtUnion Assembly(TM). Not only are these assemblies engineered to join wood pieces with lifelong strength, but they also incorporate simple artistic designs complementary to the natural beauty of solid wood. Additionally, only one simple tool - included in the kits - is required. Since the assemblies provide for extremely solid joints, the weight of any tabletop material is not a problem to the overall integrity of a piece. To that end, individuals can substitute their own glass or stone tabletop. The assemblies also allow individuals to use their own found or salvaged wood. In addition, assemblies can be custom-designed to incorporate artwork, company logos or product identities. BYO offers ultimate custom flexibility and simplicity.
BYO natural furniture kits will be available in an array of options, from complete kits ready-to-build out of the box (including the single tool required!), to partial kits with just the metal assemblies, wood resource information, and detailed instructions. This allows individuals to purchase exactly what they need to create the piece that is right for them, both in terms of assembly time, skills, and budget. Customers may choose between environmentally-certified FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) pine, redwood, or exotic woods, or salvaged lumber, and between several different assembly designs and environmentally-friendly finishes.
"Our kits mean that anybody can build a bed, table or bench they can be proud of in an hour or two," notes Tamalpais TimberWorks founder and designer Bill Callahan. Complete BYO natural furniture kits were designed specifically for individuals who have no place for building furniture, no woodworking skills or tools, and a limited amount of time and money, but who do not want to sacrifice quality. The kits also include ideas for personalizing the furniture with decorative stencils, stamps and finishes.
Partial BYO natural furniture kits were designed for individuals who have some ability and tools for working wood to its required dimensions. Tamalpais TimberWorks can supply the recycled or FSC-certified wood and finishes. They will also connect customers with their local environmental-lumber resources.
Assemblies are also available separately, for woodworkers looking for simple, beautiful and strong fasteners for their own furniture creations. "Our research shows that there are many people who prize found or salvaged wood, hoping to someday put it to good use. BYO natural furniture assemblies provide a practical platform for re-using wood," notes Callahan.
"Our research also shows that many consumers are looking for products they can feel good about, that are in line with their values as well as their pocketbooks. Our kits meet these needs, and have the power to educate consumers about the importance of supporting sustainable forestry."
Environmental stewardship is a guiding principal of Tamalpais TimberWorks. This is a critical concept: Callahan believes that green furniture can and should be competitive and affordable in the marketplace. In line with this philosophy, the company has partnered with eco-suppliers, from lumber companies specializing in FSC-harvested wood, to local deconstruction and salvage suppliers such as the Bay Area's Community Woodworks. Every step of Tamalpais TimberWork's process heeds this environmental philosophy, from using recycled paper at its headquarters, to recycled packaging and environmental finishes.
One of Tamalpais TimberWorks' partners, Community Woodworks, is a custom mill house specializing in reclaimed and salvaged urban lumber. They are a leader not only in helping conserve natural resources, but also in helping to rebuild economically disadvantaged communities. Community Woodworks works closely with and provides support for businesses and programs that train and employ low-income individuals in the salvage, deconstruction and wood re-use industries.
Tamalpais TimberWorks is also involved in a wide variety of industry associations devoted to sustainable design. Among its memberships are: Architects Designers Planners for Social Responsibility (ADPSR); Co-op America Business Network; 02 Bay Area; The Foundation for Design Integrity; and, Environmental Protection Information Center (EPIC).
The company was founded by Bill Callahan in 1994 to address the need for beautiful, lifetime-lasting and socially responsible wood products. Tamalpais TimberWorks has a patent application pending on its ArtUnion Assembly. Tamalpais TimberWorks also designs and builds custom furniture and fixtures under its Arts & Culture(TM) and Art-inDesign(TM) lines.
Tamalpais TimberWorks is an employee owned business and is seeking environment and socially responsible investors, skilled craft people and collaborative artists working in wood, metal, stone and glass. Additionally, the company is looking to develop relationships with local retailers nationwide that specialize in earth-friendly products.
BYO natural furniture availability: Kits will be available directly from Tamalpais TimberWorks' web site at www.byofurniture.com beginning in May.
