TO FAMILY AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDITORS:
Olivia Newton-John, Kelly Preston Host CHEC's New Video on Ways to Avoid
Exposing Children to Chemicals in the Home
NEW JERSEY, PRINCETON, Apr. 18 -/E-Wire/-- A new educational video that highlights children's toxic exposures to chemicals in their homes and suggests simple healthier alternatives is hosted by celebrity moms, Olivia Newton-John and Kelly Preston.
Produced by the national, nonprofit Children's Health Environmental Coalition, the 17-minute video entitled "Not Under My Roof! Protecting Your Baby From Toxins At Home" ($9.95, 1-[REDACTED-PHONE]), also includes a free at-home guide and checklist filled with tips and suggestions on how parents can make their homes environmentally safe. See http://www.checnet.org .
"There is nothing more important than the health of your child," says Nancy Chuda who, with her husband Jim, established CHEC in 1992 after their daughter Colette Chuda died from a form of non-hereditary cancer known as Wilm's tumor. "Everyday children are being exposed to dangerous chemicals in their daily environments."
Here are Newton-John's and Preston's suggestions for reducing toxins homes:
-- When in doubt -- keep it out -- avoid exposing your child to hazardous chemicals like pesticides and solvents. -- Renovate right - test for lead paint before you begin any home renovation. -- Shop smart -- buy locally grown produce, in season...and buy organic if you can. -- Ventilate -- as incredible as it sounds, the air inside a home may be more polluted than the air outside. So open a window and let the fresh air in. -- Clean with care -- use the mildest cleansers, like baking soda or vinegar and water, to freshen up the nursery.
Carrie Cook Platt is the executive producer of "Not Under My Roof! Protecting Your Baby From Toxins At Home," with Chuck Loft House as the director photography. Writers include: Newton-John, Preston, Harvey Karp M.D.(UCLA), John Wargo Ph.D. (Yale University), Platt and Elizabeth Sword, executive director of CHEC, which is located in Princeton, New Jersey. CHEC is a national non-profit organization dedicated to protecting children from environmental hazards in the home, at schools and in their communities. CHEC's mission is to inform parents about the preventable childhood health and developmental problems caused by exposure to toxic substances found in homes, schools and communities and to encourage the public to protect children from these toxic risks.
A volunteer board of directors governs CHEC with Nancy Chuda as co-founder/president and James Chuda as co-founder. An Advisory Board and a Science Advisory committee, which includes child protection advocates and many of our nation's top environmental health experts, support the organization. "Not Under My Roof! Protecting Your Baby From Toxins At Home" retails for $9.95. To order call toll free 1-[REDACTED-PHONE] or visit http://www.checnet.org.
