The Race to Stop Global Warming 8K Run/Walk

Takes Place THIS SUNDAY - APRIL 22 - on the Seattle Waterfront

LAKE OSWEGO, OREGON, Apr. 20 -/E-Wire/-- What: The Race to Stop Global Warming is an eight-kilometer (8K) run/walk along the Seattle waterfront on April 22, 2001. The net proceeds of this event will go to the Green House Network, which conducts activities to help people better understand and take action on global climate change issues.

Congressman Jay Inslee is running in the Race, Seattle City Council member Heidi Wills will co-announce the race, and Seattle Mayor Paul Schell will speak at the post-race ceremonies.

When: Sunday, April 22, 2001

Where: Runners start-line, Pier 62/63 on Alaskan Way next to The Seattle Aquarium, Seattle Walkers start-line, Pier 62/63 on Alaskan Way next to The Seattle Aquarium, Seattle Post-Race Awards Ceremony and Music, Pier 62/63 on Alaskan Way next to The Seattle Aquarium, Seattle

How To Register: Entry forms are available at NIKETOWN located on Sixth and Pike downtown Seattle.

Entry forms can be submitted at Niketown until April 21. Registration can also be submitted until April 20 on-line at www.greenhousenet.org. Runners may also register the day of the Race.

The Race registration fee is $20 for entries received in advance; registration the day of the race is $25.

The Kids' 1K Run and Diaper Dash are free.

* START: Facing north on Alaskan Way at Pier 62/63, just north of The Seattle Aquarium.

* North on Alaskan Way to Broad.

* Right (East) on Broad to Elliott.

* Left (North) on Elliott to the 180-degree left turnaround near Harrison/Western Avenue.

* South on Elliott to Broad.

* Right (West) on Broad to Pier 70/Alaskan Way.

* Right (North) into the Myrtle Edwards Park parking lot.

* North into Mrytle Edwards Park staying on the path to the right to the turnaround point approximately 100 yards past (north of) the Happy Hooker Bait Shop.

* 180-degree left turn onto the other path heading south back toward Alaskan Way and Pier 70.

* Continue South on Alaskan Way to the finish line at Pier 62/63.

Traffic Revisions / Street Closures

Vehicle traffic will be permitted throughout the event in the northbound lane of Alaskan Way and in the far right lanes of Broad and Elliott.

One northbound lane on Alaskan Way will be open throughout the morning and during the entire event. The rest of Alaskan Way, Broad and Elliott will close at 8:00 a.m. and reopen around 10:30 a.m.

Background: The Green House Network is a Portland, Oregon-based, non-profit organization dedicated to grassroots public education about the peer-reviewed science, economics and politics of global climate change. Its mission is to help foster a broad social movement – uniting citizens, students, businesses, civic organizations, and government to create the clean energy future that can stop global climate change.

The Race to Stop Global Warming started in Portland, Oregon, with 1,000 runners in 2000. This year the Race has expanded to Denver and Seattle as well and will draw more than 3,000 runners. Plans for 2002 are to expand to three more cities – San Francisco, Boston and Chicago.

Sponsors for 2001 include Nike, Aveda, CH2M Hill, the Pax World Fund, Seattle City Light, The Seattle Aquarium and other local sponsors.
