Food Service Program Leader Wins Public Policy Excellence Award From Science Interchange, Inc.
CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY, Apr. 24 -/E-Wire/-- Tom Bates, Consultant to the Center for Ecoliteracy and former California State Assemblyman, received the California Association of Nonprofits (CAN) Public Policy Excellence Public Service Award on April 25, 2001 at an awards ceremony hosted at the State Capital. This honor is based upon his outstanding work and leadership with the Berkeley Food Project. Tom's work truly exemplifies the significant value and benefit of nonprofit involvement in California's public policy development. Mr. Bates is a member of the Center for Ecoliteracy Policy Initiative Team who helped facilitate the community process resulting in the drafting and adoption of the BUSD (Berkeley Unified School District) Food Policy, one which ensures "no student in Berkeley is hungry." He is also Founding Chair of the East Bay Public Safety Corridor Partnership and represented Berkeley in the California State Assembly for twenty years.
A project of the Center for Ecoliteracy, Food Systems works to improve the health of children and families in the Berkeley Unified School District. By supporting a garden classroom in every school, improving food access and nutritional health in the child nutrition service, linking family farms to schools, and tackling food related public policy issues, the Food Systems Project has been an overwhelming success.
The California Association of Nonprofits (CAN) and its independent policy advisory group, the Nonprofit Council, presented the awards at the Fifth Annual Public Policy Excellence Awards Ceremony in the Governor's Council Room. CAN is a statewide membership association of almost 2,000 diverse nonprofit organizations with a mission to strengthen and expand the professionalism, governance, influence and effectiveness of California nonprofit organizations.
