They're Back ... California Commercial Salmon Season Opens May 1
CALIFORNIA, FOLSOM, Apr. 26 -/E-Wire/-- May 1 marks the opening day of the California commercial salmon fishing season, which continues through Sept. 30.
Most of the California catch is composed of Sacramento River Fall-Run Chinook salmon, which continued to have above average returns last year. "Last year, the commercial salmon trolling fleet caught 4.5 million pounds of California King Salmon®, an 18 percent increase over the 1999 catch of 3.8 million pounds,' said Kevin Collins, chairman of the California Salmon Council.
Sacramento River Fall-Run salmon are bountiful because of decades of work undertaken by fishermen to conserve and enhance these fish. California fishermen also abide by regulations designed to ensure there will be a sustainable supply of these fish now and in the future. When dams went up along rivers to capture water, so did construction of hatcheries, to provide for future salmon generations.
These hatcheries replenish salmon stocks by the millions each year. Collins added, "Salmon species vary on where they're caught, and whether they're from the ocean or farm-raised. California salmon, or Chinooks, are called "kings' because they are regarded as the most prized, as well as the largest, of the five species of Pacific salmon.'
The USDA recently reported that wild California King salmon has 29.4 percent more omega-3 fatty acids than previously reported. Studies have shown that foods rich in omega-3 help to reduce the risk of cardiac arrest, as well as to increase cognitive function and to reduce depression.
Collins added, "When consumers purchase California King Salmon, they get fresher fish, because they're caught locally off California's coastline. King salmon have a higher oil content that adds to theirnatural robust flavor and deep coloring.'
