Pathways To Paradise's Small-Group Eco-Tours Benefit Village in Fiji

CALIFORNIA, DEL MAR, Apr. 30 -/E-Wire/-- Join an eco-tour to a small island in Fiji where the only high rise is a nearby mountain peak. Travelers to Kuata Island enjoy guided soft eco-adventures like sea kayaking, snorkeling and hiking, and unwind with a massage or yoga class and a gourmet meal. They can also simply relax on white sand beaches surrounded by crystal clear turquoise lagoons. But there's an added bonus. Visitors who care about sustainable travel know their low-impact vacation, employee team-building excursion, or spiritual retreat is benefiting the local village.

"We're teaching the Namara Village how to run a cottage industry, yet introducing guests to adventure and cultural experiences at the same time," says Los Angeles resident Laurenz Best, co-owner of Pathways to Paradise. "We help people forget their everyday stresses and return to a simpler way of life."

Kuata Island is located in the southern Yasawa Islands, the chain where "Blue Lagoon" and "Castaway" were filmed. Individuals, couples and small groups can experience the cozy and comfortable, while sleeping in thatched-roof bungalows, taking guided hikes to waterfalls, making cultural visits, and snorkeling, windsurfing, diving and sea kayaking in the soft-coral capital of the world.

What else sets this eco-resort apart? The reasonably priced resort accommodates only 20 guests (although arrangements can be made for larger groups), allowing travelers to enjoy a true tropical island experience, without the crowds.

Programs can be tailored to groups for health retreats, company incentive programs, kayaking, snorkeling and diving clubs, photography and art clubs, women's retreats, birding and nature organizations, writers' workshops, teen groups, and more.

Kuata Island is located 26 nautical miles from the Nadi International Airport on Viti Levu. Owners Darren Fulhorst of La Jolla, Calif., and Best have been guiding people through a variety of international wilderness experiences for 15 and 20 years respectively.

Pathways to Paradise introduced solar and propane energy to the 144-acre island, along with organic gardening, recycling, refrigeration and hot water. It also buys produce, hand-woven mats, fish and crafts from the village.

"We've also set up a fund for island children that was started by our guests," says Best. "Books for a grade-schooler only cost $12.50 for a year, but many families cannot even afford that."

Cost: $1950 per person, double occupancy, including round-trip airfare from Los Angeles, 7 nights accommodations, land and sea transfers, three gourmet meals daily, professional guides, yoga classes, use of windsurfing, snorkeling and kayaking equipment, and more. Extras include massage, diving equipment, tips and drinks. The first tour departs June 28; the last, Sept. 27. Add-on airfare from other U.S. cities is also available.

Two-week specials for $2250 per person, double occupancy, are available on selected dates on a first-come, first-served basis. Deposit deadline for these specials is June 1.
