Surebeam Signs Agreement to Install Nation's First In-Line Electronic Pasteurization Systems at Two Excel Meat Processing Facilities
CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO, May. 8 -/E-Wire/-- SureBeam Corporation (Nasdaq:SURE) innovator of the nation's first electronic pasteurization system -- today announced that it has signed an in-line system electronic pasteurization services agreement with Excel Corporation, a leading producer of beef and pork, to engineer, manufacture, and install electronic pasteurization systems for two of Excel's processing facilities, located in Schuyler, Nebraska, and Plainview, Texas.
Similar to a microwave oven, the SureBeam(R) electronic pasteurization system uses ordinary electricity as its energy source to pasteurize food after it has been processed and packaged, helping to eliminate in seconds the threat of harmful food-borne bacteria without affecting the food's quality.
"Excel is committed to using the best tools to deliver food safety to our customers and consumers," said Bill Rupp, Excel's Executive Vice President, North American Beef business unit. "We believe that the SureBeam electronic pasteurization system is a proven method to do that."
SureBeam will incorporate and install its technology directly into Excel's existing meat processing facilities. Once installed and operational, SureBeam will continue to own and operate its patented technology, charging Excel a processing fee on a per pound basis. For the past year, under a multiyear exclusive agreement with SureBeam, Excel has been testing and validating meat products at SureBeam's Sioux City facility. Based in Wichita, Kansas, Excel is the second largest meat processor in North America, processing approximately 7.5 billion pounds per year. Excel is a subsidiary of Minneapolis-based Cargill, Incorporated.
SureBeam's in-line electronic pasteurization system is capable of being configured to complement existing food processing systems. The technology can simultaneously process products differing in type, size, and density. Approved by the FDA and USDA, this process-which helps eliminate virulent bacteria such as E. coli 0157:H7-provides another layer of protection from food-borne bacteria.
SureBeam's strategic business plan calls for the building of a nationwide servicing network and to install SureBeam electronic pasteurizing technology in-line within the processing plants of major national food processors. The Company recently announced that it was tripling its service center capacity with the construction of new centers strategically located across the United States. Reflecting a growing consumer demand, SureBeam electronically pasteurized products are sold across the nation in over 2,000 supermarkets, as well as by home delivery and through food service.
Besides its Schuyler and Plainview facilities, Excel has fresh beef processing facilities in Dodge City, Kansas; Friona, Texas, Ft. Morgan, Colorado, and its Cargill Ltd. affiliate High River, Alberta, Canada. The company employs about 20,000 people in eight countries.
Excel is an industry leader in food safety. Among its achievements are:
* Implementation of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) in all plants by 1991, seven years before the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) began requiring plants to have HACCP in place. USDA research has shown that HACCP has improved food safety over the years. * Establishing microbiological laboratories in all plants by 1990. The scientific data from the testing helps Excel monitor the effectiveness of its food safety programs. * Co-development of steam pasteurization, which is technology that greatly enhances the safety of beef products. Excel gave competitors access to the technology by waiving its co-patent rights.
SureBeam Corporation was created, built, and launched by The Titan Corporation (NYSE:TTN) in an initial public offering on March 16.
