OHIO, CLEVELAND, May. 22 -/E-Wire/-- Alcan Aluminum Corporation (NYSE: AL) today announced it set a new record in 2000 by recycling nearly 24 billion used beverage cans (UBCs) -- saving enough energy to light and heat over 320,000 homes for one year.

"With the current energy constraints, energy savings become an even-more- important benefit to recycling aluminum in addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and conserving natural resources," said Stephen Bettcher, President, Global Can for Alcan Aluminum Corporation. "The number of cans we recycled increased 10 percent from 1999, and is consistent with a steady increase for the past 10 years. Alcan's commitment to recycling, and thus energy and environmental conservation, continues to grow unabated," added Bettcher.
The aluminum can is the most valuable and the most recycled beverage container. Producing recycled aluminum saves 95 percent of the energy used to make aluminum from raw materials. In addition, the average beverage can itself has more than 50 percent recycled content, significantly more than any other beverage container.
Together, Alcan's three can recycling operations in the United States - Berea, KY., Oswego, N.Y., and Greensboro, GA. -- recycle 40 percent of the 62.6 billion UBCs annually recycled in the U.S. Each year, Alcan improves operating efficiencies at its recycling facilities to meet production demands for aluminum manufacturing. In 2000, the company's Berea, KY., operation, the world's largest UBC recycling facility, increased production by 13 percent, recycling a record 11 billion UBCs.
Nationwide, aluminum can recycling totaled, 62.6 billion cans, as announced by The Aluminum Association, Can Manufacturers Institute and the Institute of Recycling Scrap Industries.
Alcan Aluminum Corporation based in Cleveland, Ohio, is the U.S. subsidiary of Alcan, Inc.
