MGE UPS SYSTEMS and Capstone Turbine Partner

to Deliver Continuous Power to Businesses

UPS and Microturbine Combination Ensures 100 Percent Power Availability

CALIFORNIA, COSTA MESA, May. 30 -/E-Wire/-- MGE UPS SYSTEMS, the technology leader in providing unsurpassed power protection solutions to computer data centers,

telecommunications and industrial operations, today announced that it has entered

into a development agreement with Capstone Turbine Corporation (Nasdaq: CPST) to offer

Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSs) combined with microturbine power generation to

businesses that must have clean, reliable and steady power. As businesses continue to

suffer the affects of power outages due to the energy supply crisis, this new

integrated solution will meet the needs of facilities running critical computing and

production operations that demand 100 percent power availability. MGE will deploy

Capstone MicroTurbines in a variety of turnkey, scalable power-generating UPS

solutions specifically configured to meet the power protection needs of its

Onsite generation systems such as the Capstone MicroTurbine are supplements to large

power plants and the electric grid. Creating power onsite enables businesses to

improve power reliability, add capacity, isolate themselves from power disturbances,

and reduce their reliance on expensive peak utility power.

"We're very excited about this new partnership with Capstone. When you consider

Capstone's reputation for long-term reliability, its UL-Listings for safety and its

endorsement as the world's "most innovative commercial technology" by the Financial

Time's Energy organization, the Capstone MicroTurbine arrays are one of the best

commercially viable options for ongoing, clean, onsite power generation," stated MGE

President of the Americas, Dave Petratis. "Offering Capstone's superior MicroTurbines

with our very efficient UPS systems gives customers an intelligent solution for

When the utility power fails, MGE's UPS systems will protect connected equipment and

then switch to the microturbine for extended uptime. The UPS bridges the power gap

between the computer system and the microturbine to ensure continuous power when

transferring from the UPS to the microturbine. A momentary glitch in power is enough

to damage a computer network, corrupt data or throw computer-controlled manufacturing

equipment offline. "It can sometimes take hours to reboot a network and the loss of

in-process and ongoing transactions can be financially devastating," added Petratis.

"Similarly, manufactures with computer-controlled production systems can lose more

than a day's worth of business in lot production, materials, labor and inventory

during a very brief power instability event."

MGE UPS SYSTEMS and Capstone Partner to Deliver Businesses Continuous Electricity

"MGE has expressed that the integration of long-term or continuous onsite power

production with onsite energy storage may have a significant impact on the power

quality/reliability market. As the nation's leading supplier of power reliability

products, MGE's recognition of Capstone MicroTurbines as fitting their market segments

is significant," said Dr. Ake Almgren, president and CEO of Capstone Turbine.

Wide-scale distributed generation-and-storage systems will benefit the public at

large by reducing demands on the power grid, especially at times of peak demand when

the reliability and quality of power delivered by utilities is most strained. "To the

beleaguered utility grid, turning on Capstone MicroTurbines is essentially the same as

shutting down a load. For a data center, hospital, manufacturing plant, telecom site

or virtually any other business, the difference can be significant - to have power or

not to have power. This, of course, is particularly essential here in California in

light of expected rolling blackouts," Dr. Almgren added.

Different than conventional generator sets that combine a reciprocating engine like

those used in trucks with a separate power generator, microturbines are a newer

technology that combine scaled down jet engine technology with an integrated

generator. Capstone MicroTurbines have a single moving part, use no liquid lubricants

or coolants, have no gearbox or other mechanical subsystems, and can operate at full

load 24 hours a day for a year before reaching the first recommended maintenance: an

air and fuel filter change. Grid interconnection safety requirements, remote

dispatching and 2-to-20-unit arraying capabilities are built into the system's power

electronics, eliminating the need for switchgear and other costly external hardware.

The Capstone MicroTurbine system is suitable for applications ranging from remote

locations to city centers, delivering clean, high quality power from a wide variety of

fuels, with superior safety and extremely low emissions
