TO BUSINESS, ENVIRONMENTAL AND MEDICAL EDITORS:
Donlar, in Conjunction with BP Exploration, Introduces Donlar's New
Environmentally Friendly and Biodegradable Products for North Sea Oil
ILLINOIS, BEDFORD PARK, Jun. 5 -/E-Wire/-- Donlar Biosyntrex Corporation ("Donlar") (OTC Bulletin Board: BIME) is a diverse biotech company specializing in the development, manufacture, marketing, and sales of protein products used in a wide range of industrial, agricultural and consumer markets. These products represent a new family of biopolymers known as thermal polyaspartates (TPA), which are non-hazardous, non-toxic, hypoallergenic, environmentally friendly and biodegradable. Donlar, in conjunction with British Petroleum Exploration ("BP Exploration") (NYSE: BP), collaborated in a white paper detailing Donlar's new dual function, environmentally friendly and biodegradable products for use in North Sea oilfield production.
The paper, presented at the 2001 SPE International Symposium on Oilfield Chemistry jointly by Donlar and BP Exploration, introduced Donlar's patented multifunctional thermal polyaspartates (TPA) products that act both as a scale and corrosion inhibitor. Donlar's TPA products are readily biodegradable and have achieved the stringent standards required for its use in the North Sea according to BP Exploration. They are non-toxic to both mammals and aquatic life and there is no threat of accumulation in sediments and aquatic organisms. Donlar's TPA products have the highest rating possible under OCNS guidelines.
Performance tests have proven that Donlar's TPA products exceed most commercially available products. Studies demonstrate that TPA products can inhibit both carbonate and sulfate based scales, which gives it the broad product applicability for use in most oilfield applications. In a head to head Round Robin test program performed by BP Exploration, corrosion tests showed that greater than 90% inhibition in a carbon dioxide rich environment can be achieved. In addition, TPA products have proven to have superior tolerance to the high calcium brines found in North Sea operations. An unexpected observation showed in the oil and brine separation process, oil and brine appeared to separate faster and more completely with TPA products than with conventional chemicals.
Donlar's TPA products have added benefits in cost performance. This multifunctional protein based product generates significant cost savings by replacing the use of several products with one. The economic benefit is lower product cost, lower equipment cost, and lower logistics costs with overall improved performance. "The current sales potential for these products in oilfield chemicals alone exceeds $600 million worldwide," stated Mr. Robert P. Pietrangelo, President of Donlar BioPolymers, a division of Donlar Biosyntrex Corporation. This sales potential does not include other industrial, agricultural, or consumer markets.
Donlar intends to apply for a NASD listing change and has received Board approval to recommend to its shareholders a name change from Biomune Systems, Inc. to Donlar Biosyntrex Corporation at the next annual meeting.
Donlar is a twenty-first century research, development and marketing company that produce products ranging from performance chemicals and agricultural enhancers, to pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. Donlar is proud to have been the recipient of the EPA's first Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award for its work in the development of environmentally responsible products and manufacturing processes. Investments of over $60 million devoted to Donlar's research and development efforts have resulted in the issuance of one hundred and thirty global patents that protect its TPA technology, products and marketplace Donlar's products are manufactured in its state-of-the-art facility located in Peru, Illinois.
