GCC Applaud's President's Practical, Balanced Approach to Climate Policy

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, WASHINGTON, Jun. 11 -/E-Wire/-- The Global Climate Coalition (GCC) today welcomed President Bush's outline for a practical, forward-looking approach to respond to the complex challenges of climate change policies.

"President Bush has squarely placed the United States into a leadership position on the important issue of global climate change," said Glenn Kelly, Executive Director of the GCC. "By proposing a series of positive domestic and international initiatives to address climate change, the President is helping to lead the world out of the Kyoto quagmire and toward an effective global response to this complex challenge."

In remarks at the White House today, President Bush outlined a common sense policy framework to seriously address potential global climate change. For many years, GCC has advocated a similar approach highlighted and released last year in its "21st Century Climate Action Agenda."

"The President struck the right balance in his announcement today," Kelly said. "The responsible approach to climate should be based on sound science, market principles that protect workers and families, global commitment and an understanding that technology -- not UN regulation -- will provide the long-term solutions far more effectively than the Kyoto Protocol.

To his credit, President Bush has removed the Kyoto blinders that have hindered this process and demonstrated American leadership, effectively showing there is a better, visionary approach. Now, it's up to the international community to stop the bickering and blaming that has proven counterproductive before and after the disasterous collapse of negotiations in The Hague. Only by working together can all nations make positive steps forward that will address this complex global challenge.
