Green Mountain Energy Company Partners With The Winston School to Sponsor
Cross-Country High School Solar Car Race
From Austin, Texas, to Indianapolis During July
Students to Compete in Green Mountain Energy Winston Solar Challenge and Race
TEXAS, AUSTIN, Jun. 14 -/E-Wire/-- In the race to promote the development and use of clean energy and science education and innovation, Green Mountain Energy Company, the nation's largest provider of cleaner electricity, will be at the starting line as the title sponsor of the 2001 Green Mountain Energy(SM) Winston Solar Challenge with The Winston School.
The 1400-mile, internationally recognized race, in its seventh year, is part of the Winston Solar Education Program, encompassing workshops and curriculum materials developed by the Dallas-based Winston School to provide students with a solid foundation for building and safely racing solar-powered vehicles.
Beginning July 17, 10 teams from throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Mexico will compete in the eight-day Green Mountain Energy(SM) Winston Solar Challenge, which is designed to motivate students in the sciences, and to emphasize the value of alternative energy sources. Students participating in this year's race will run a course from Round Rock, Texas, near Austin, to Columbus, Ind., near Indianapolis, and will be stopping at various points along the route, including the Texas Motor Speedway in Dallas.
"The Winston Solar Education Program will benefit greatly from its partnership with Green Mountain Energy Company. The company's goal of providing cleaner air through electricity generated from renewable sources such as the wind and sun is aligned with The Winston School's objectives for its applied solar curriculum, including educating students on the uses and environmental benefits of alternative energy," said Dr. Lehman Marks, event coordinator for The Winston School.
"Green Mountain Energy Company is excited to sponsor this race and we are inspired by these great kids doing great things to help increase awareness of clean energy sources. The race also goes hand in hand with our goal to support 100 percent pollution-free energy," said Gillan Taddune, vice president and general manager, Texas for Green Mountain Energy Company. "We are looking forward to a long and productive relationship with The Winston School, to help them continue to harness the power of solar energy."
The Winston Solar Car Team hosted the first Challenge in 1995, with 90 schools vying for a chance to compete in the event, nine schools building cars for the race and three cars qualifying to participate. The Winston School now hosts annual events. Even numbered year events are closed track races, and odd numbered year events, like this year's, are cross-country races. Since its inception nine years ago, the Winston Solar Education Program has helped students from more than 800 schools in 20 countries learn the science and art of building and racing solar-powered cars.
