AT&T; Invites Proposals for its Industrial Ecology Grants

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, Jul. 5 -/E-Wire/-- AT&T; today invited proposals for its 2001 AT&T; Industrial Ecology Faculty Fellowship program by university faculty members. The 2001 program summary and guidelines are web-based documents. Faculty members at six universities will be selected to receive fellowship grants totaling $150,000 as part of an AT&T; Foundation effort to encourage academic activity in the emerging field of industrial ecology. Fellowship winners will be selected after a competitive evaluation process by the AT&T; Foundation and AT&T; technical experts.

Industrial ecology is the multidisciplinary field that focuses on the study of industrial and economic systems and their linkages with fundamental natural systems. Often referred to as the "science of sustainability," it reflects the fact that environmental considerations are now recognized as strategic to individuals, industry and society as a whole.

"As a leader in information movement and management, AT&T; feels a particular responsibility for helping universities to produce future leaders in fields relevant to industrial ecology and in helping to define and focus research activities," said Brad Allenby, AT&T; Environment, Health and Safety vice president.

The AT&T; Foundation established the Industrial Ecology Grants Program in 1993 to encourage academic activity in this field. Since then, the program has awarded faculty research fellowships, supported the Colloquium on Industrial Ecology at the National Academy of Sciences, supported two conferences on research in the field, and helped launch the Journal of Industrial Ecology. This program is consistent with AT&T;'s environmental social responsibility and its support of environmental initiatives and organizations.

The AT&T; Foundation invests in projects that address a range of public concerns. Emphasis is placed on programs that serve the needs of people in communities where AT&T; has a significant business presence; initiatives that use technology in innovative ways; and programs that AT&T; employees are actively involved with as contributors and/or volunteers.
