Caribbean Conservation Corporation & Volvo Ocean Adventure Offer Sea Turtle Education Program
Includes Free Adventure Trip for 12 Teachers and Students
FLORIDA, GAINESVILLE, Jul. 3 -/E-Wire/-- The nonprofit Caribbean Conservation Corporation (CCC) and the Volvo Ocean Adventure (VOA) have formed a partnership to increase awareness about sea turtles and the marine environment. The year-long education program, which will coincide with the round-the-world Volvo Ocean Race, officially begins in September with start of the race. In the meantime, CCC and VOA are offering U.S. high school teachers and students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in a Costa Rica sea turtle research project--all expenses paid.
High school teachers are invited to register now for the free trip by filling out a simple on-line form on the CCC web site (www.cccturtle.org). On July 30, 2001, two groups of winners will be selected to participate. Each winning group will consist of one teacher and five high school students. The winning teachers will be responsible for selecting and organizing 5 eligible students to bring on the trip. Winners will have all travel, lodging and meals provided during a four day trip to Tortuguero, Costa Rica, where they will assist CCC researchers in monitoring sea turtle nesting on the beach. During the September 9-12, 2001, trip, the winning teachers and students will also assist in releasing a sea turtle fitted with a satellite transmitter. As this and other turtles are tracked by satellite, their movements will be posted on maps available for free on the CCC/VOA web site.
CCC is the world's oldest sea turtle research and conservation group. Each year, CCC conducts sea turtle nest monitoring and protection programs out of its field station in Tortuguero. Through its Sea Turtle Migration-Tracking Education Program, CCC has reached hundreds of thousands of people with information about sea turtles and the threats to their survival. By partnering with the Volvo Ocean Adventure, CCC hopes to reach even more people with its on-line educational resources. VOA is the educational outreach component of the upcoming Volvo Ocean Race, a grueling around-the-world sailing race sponsored by Volvo. During the 9-month race, the VOA web site will track participating race boats, highlighting timely environmental topics along the way. CCC's web site will provide links to information about sea turtles being tracked during the race. Both sites will include useful lesson plans and other activities that help teachers incorporate the resources into the classroom.
