BC Hydro and Pembina Institute to work on sustainability projects

CANADA, BRITISH COLUMBIA, VANCOUVER, Jul. 5 -/E-Wire/-- BC Hydro and the Pembina Institute for Appropriate Development have marked their on-going relationship by signing a memorandum of understanding to continue to work together on leading-edge sustainability projects. This agreement marks the first partnership between BC Hydro and a non-governmental organization (NGO).

"BC Hydro will gain a wealth of information and insight into how to continue to move the company towards a more sustainable future from working alongside the Pembina Institute," said BC Hydro President and CEO Michael Costello. "The Institute's perspective and advice on strategic direction and sustainability decision-making is invaluable to BC Hydro. We look forward to growing and developing our partnership."

The Pembina Institute is a nationally-recognized, independent public interest organization and non-profit consulting group with special skills in energy, environmental economics, and sustainable resource management. In addition to cooperating with BC Hydro on a number of joint projects, the Pembina Institute will provide contract consulting services to BC Hydro in areas such as management of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, development of green energy resources, and reporting on environmental performance.

"This memorandum with BC Hydro is an important agreement that will allow the Pembina Institute to help BC Hydro take a step closer towards its goal of becoming a sustainable energy company," said Pembina Institute Executive Director David Pollock. "There is great value in corporations and non-governmental organizations working together to accomplish a common goal. We believe that BC Hydro's commitment to a greener and more sustainable future can make a difference in British Columbia, and we hope that many other companies will soon make similar commitments."

Some of the joint projects on which BC Hydro and the Pembina Institute are currently collaborating include: working with the Xeni Gwet'in First Nation in Nemiah Valley in BC's central interior to assess long-term energy options; participating in a coalition of corporations, NGOs, and municipalities to develop tax policy to accelerate the development of renewable energy in Canada; defining clear criteria for green energy resources.; and supporting education on climate change in BC's secondary schools.

Costello added: "The future of energy is changing and this partnership will enable us to be leaders at the forefront of those changes."
