In this ongoing study entitled, "A Vaginal Lubricant Formulation as A Topical Therapy for Female Sexual Dysfunction," Wainstein and Zaslau wanted to determine the possible role for topical therapy in women with self-described sexual dysfunction. Fifteen women with at least six months of sexual dysfunction were initially enrolled in this open-label study. Patients filled out a questionnaire on sexual satisfaction/dissatisfaction before entering the study. They were then asked to apply a "sexually stimulating personal lubricant" (ProSensual) to the vagina and clitoris prior to sexual activity.

Efficacy was assessed at baseline and at 4-week intervals thereafter using the Index of Female Sexual Function (IFSF).

The Wainstein and Zaslau study found that ProSensual was successful in three main areas of sexual function: improvement on three different levels of lubrication, ability to achieve orgasm and clitoral sensation. Over 85 percent of the study's subjects said they would recommend ProSensual to a friend.

Both doctors concluded, "vaginal lubrication is efficacious and safe for women with sexual dysfunction as evidenced by the significant improvement in IFSF scores with short term follow up. As the treatment options for female sexual dysfunction broaden, we believe that topical therapy will play an important role for affected women." Currently, Dr. Sheldon Pike, M.D., Beth Israel Medical Center, New York, NY, is conducting a prospective double blind study, which includes individuals who are not sexually dysfunctional.
