FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Ingersoll-Rand's Thermo King Unit Develops Innovative, Cryogenic-powered Transport Temperature-controlled System

Environment-friendly Refrigeration Unit Operates Without Ozone-Depleting Chemicals; Reduces Noise Pollution As Well

NEW JERSEY, WOODCLIFF LAKE, Feb. 15 -/E-Wire/-- Ingersoll-Rand Company (NYSE: IR - news), a leading diversified industrial firm, today announced that its Thermo King unit has developed an innovative transport refrigeration system that enables food distributors to address environmental concerns related to atmospheric ozone-depletion, and diesel fuel and noise pollution.

Thermo King's new environment-friendly, cryogenic-powered SB-III CR temperature control system uses carbon dioxide, a naturally occurring refrigerant, for heating and cooling. This eliminates the need for and emissions of ozone-depleting commercial refrigerants. In addition, the SB-III CR system has 98% fewer moving parts than conventional systems, dramatically reducing operational noise levels.

"As the industry leader in truck refrigeration products, Thermo King is committed to delivering innovative product solutions that meet customers' business needs while also responding to public concerns about environmental issues and noise pollution,' said Gordon Mapp, president of IR's Climate Control Sector. "Thermo King was the first to develop a refrigeration system that used CFC alternatives. Now, with the SB-III CR unit, Thermo King is first to develop a refrigeration system that eliminates ozone-depleting refrigerants and the use of diesel fuel.'

At the beginning of 2001, the SB-III CR unit played a key role in helping a leading supermarket chain in the Netherlands, Albert Heijn, choose a transport system that meets a new, national environmental directive concerning noise.

Specifically, the Dutch national regulation stipulates that noise levels cannot exceed 60 decibels (dB) - equivalent to a normal conversation -- from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. This law presented a challenge to the Dutch supermarket industry since foods are commonly delivered in the early morning and conventional temperature control systems typically operate between 74-78 dB.

While Europe is traditionally the world leader in passing environmental and noise ordinances, a growing number of U.S. states and cities have recently proposed similar bills to help reduce pollution and excess noise, citing problems such as motor vehicle emissions, too much traffic, loud trucks, and loud car stereo systems.

Thermo King's SB-III CR system will soon be available throughout Europe. Later this year it will be introduced in the U.S as market demand arises.

The unit is a high capacity, one-piece, front-mounted, cryogen-powered, cooling and heating unit designed for jumbo trailers. At the heart of the new system is Thermo King's patented vapor motor that drives the evaporator blower and brushless alternator. A propane-fired heater superheats the carbon dioxide for heating and defrosting. More information about the unit can be found at www.thermoking.com.
