Experts to Preview International Climate Change Talks

World to Finalize Kyoto Protocol;

Governments, Business, Nonprofits Move Ahead Without U.S.

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, Oct. 30 -/E-Wire/-- MEDIA ADVISORY FOR THURSDAY, NOV. 1, 2001, 12:30 p.m. EST Environmental leaders from the U.S. Climate Action Network (USCAN), a coalition of the country's leading organizations working on climate issues, will brief the media on the next round of negotiations for the Kyoto Protocol at an EMS Press Briefing this Thursday, November 1.

Officials from around the world began arriving today in Marrakesh, Morocco, to finalize rules for implementation of the Kyoto Protocol, the first treaty to include internationally binding commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. At the briefing, environmental experts will discuss key issues to be addressed, and detail the importance of the treaty for the U.S. and the world.

The Bush administration continues to sit on the sidelines, out of step with the American people. A recent poll by the Pew Center on Global Climate Change shows that nearly 60 percent of Americans feel the interests of U.S. allies should now be taken into account by U.S. policymakers. Climate experts will explain how the U.S. and U.S. businesses may be left behind as the world moves toward ratification of a treaty.

USCAN members include: Center for International Environmental Law, Environmental Defense, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, National Environmental Trust, National Wildlife Federation, Natural Resources Defense Council, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Sierra Club, Union of Concerned Scientists, World Wildlife Fund and other leaders in the environment, religious and public health community.
