FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Largest day of action ever against a forest destroying corporation in US History

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, Nov. 8 -/E-Wire/-- Largest day of action ever against a forest destroying corporation in US History; Over 175 Demonstrations at Staples Stores Nationwide

What: Demonstrations in 46 states by students, concerned citizens and grassroots activists

When: November 13th, 2001

Where: Staples stores across the nation, as well as at the Staples headquarters in Framingham, Massachusetts. Contact Liz Butler [REDACTED-PHONE], or Kelly Sheehan (828)251-2525 extension 16, for the address of the action closest to you.

Why: Staples' largest selling copy paper, the redbox store brand, is made 100% from trees, with 0% recycled content, completely disregarding the interests of the 50% of Americans who consider themselves environmentalists, (Gallup Pole, 4/01.) Over 70% of the paper made in the United States - for companies like Staples -comes from the Southeast US, where an area twice the size of Yellowstone is cut each year to make pulp. Home Depot and Lowe's, have already agreed to NOT BUY AND SELL products coming from endangered forests. Lowe's has gone a step further by developing a provision to protect threatened Southern forests. Now Staples has an opportunity to become a leader in the industry by committing to exclusively buy and sell paper with high-post-consumer recycled content. As the nation's largest and fastest growing office supply retailer worth over $11 billion, Staples is in a prime position to continue to not only control the market financially, but ethically as well.
