EZConserve Receives $750,000 Commitment from the NW Energy Efficiency Alliance, Prepares for Launch of a Product that Combats $1.4 Billion Annual Energy Loss
OREGON, PORTLAND, Nov. 9 -/E-Wire/-- EZConserve, Inc. announced that a $750,000 commitment has been made to the company by the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, a regional consortium that brings affordable, energy-efficient products and services to the northwest marketplace.
EZConserve launched in February of this year and is developing a software-based energy management system that promises to significantly reduce energy consumption in companies and organizations fielding large numbers of networked PCs. The Alliance receives financial backing from the Bonneville Power Administration and six investor-owned utilities in the Northwest, and then directs these funds into energy conservation projects that have the potential to change the way energy is used in the region.
U.S. companies spend over $1.4 billion every year on wasted energy, according to research from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories. The waste can be directly attributed to poor usage practices with their networked PCs: Computers left running over periods of non-use, at night and on weekends are responsible for 24 million megawatt-hours of energy waste annually. While Energy Star initiatives have largely automated shutdown and sleep modes in PCs and monitors, this loss persists because the use of Energy Star features has been left to the preferences of individual users - and recent studies have shown that as many as 75% of computer users turn these features off completely. A company of 500 PC-using employees is likely to have hundreds of different power settings in use, with the majority of users disabling these features completely.
EZConserve's launch product, scheduled for release this winter, will manage the power settings of a company's full compliment of PCs by deploying a tool that adjusts these settings at the network level. The product insures that each PC in the company adheres to "best practices' energy settings at night and over weekends, while allowing users to have limited control over their preferences during working hours. The software acts as a power-consumption watchdog on the network, providing control over an energy demand that can reach fifteen to forty-five percent of a company's overall electrical consumption.
"This product has the potential to save Northwest businesses money on their monthly electricity costs without inconveniencing workers or inhibiting productivity,' said Alliance Executive Director MargaretGardner. "The advanced thinking that produced EZConserve's software is the kind of innovation the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance works to develop and foster.'
The $750,000 commitment comes to EZConserve in the form of low-interest long-term loans, with additional marketing and communications support from the Alliance included as a part of the overall package. According to EZConserve founder and CEO James Tatham, executives in the company are thrilled by the terms of the deal. "The Alliance's support and endorsement provides additional validation for both our company and our concepts, and they will make an excellent long-term partner for our young company as we seek additional funding.'
Part of the Alliance money has already been put to work, with the hiring of additional development staff at EZConserve and the acquisition of new office spaces in southwest Portland's Lincoln Center complex.
