Horizon Organic HO HO HO's Into The Holiday

Alternative Holiday Packaging Paired With Organic Eggnog and Baking Ideas

Kicks Off the Holiday Season

COLORADO, BOULDER, Nov. 13 -/E-Wire/-- The holidays are right around the corner and Horizon Organic, the nation's leading organic brand, is getting in the spirit with the annual launch of its seasonal packaging, organic eggnog and a Bake-it-Organic promotion. Beginning this month, Horizon Organic offers consumers an organic alternative to celebrating the most anticipated holidays of the year.

With its primary colors and its familiar happy cow waving the organic flag, Horizon Organic has become the most recognized brand in the organic foods industry. It is one of the few companies that can alter its packaging without diminishing returns or loss of brand equity. To the delight of its consumers, Horizon Organic dresses the happy cow at select times throughout the year. For the upcoming holiday season, the happy cow comes dressed in festive regalia, complete with red hat and candy cane, and "Ho Ho Ho" replaces the Horizon Organic name on the package. The packaging will start appearing on shelves in November and will appear on all milk cartons for a limited time.

"Everybody loves the holidays, including our happy cow," said Chuck Marcy, CEO of Horizon Organic. "Dressing up our packaging, selling eggnog and providing consumers with fun and easy organic recipes is our way of saying Happy Holidays to all our consumers."

Horizon Organic Eggnog Although the name eggnog has left scholars guessing as to its origin, Horizon Organic knows that it continues to be a holiday favorite among consumers. From now through the end of the year, Horizon Organic is offering an organic, low fat version of the holiday classic at supermarkets and specialty stores across the country. Consumers can enjoy the rich and creamy taste of Horizon Organic's eggnog knowing that it is made with certified organic milk, eggs, sugar and nutmeg, and is produced without the use of hormones, antibiotics or pesticides. Last year, Horizon Organic introduced its eggnog to great acclaim and is expected to double sales this year.

Bake-it-Organic Promotion Recognizing the increasing demand for organic products, Horizon Organic is giving consumers new options and ideas for preparing traditional holiday favorites organically. For the second consecutive year, Horizon Organic is fielding Bake-it-Organic for the Holidays, an in-store campaign to promote organic food choices for baking and holiday entertaining. Teaming up with other leaders in the organic foods industry, including Frontier Organic Spices and Florida Crystals Organic Sugar, Horizon Organic is offering consumers valuable savings on organic butter, sugar and spices, as well as delicious holiday baking recipes.

Bake-it-Organic includes in-store displays at select food stores, presenting consumers with ideas and ingredients to bake entirely organic holiday goodies this year. This year's recipes include: Very Berry Star Cookies, Organic Sour Cream Apple Pie, Holiday Spiced Ginger Bars and Double Chocolate Christmas Tort. Natural food stores across the country will have recipe/coupon tear pads available with up to $5 in savings on organic butter, sugar and spices. Horizon Organic is also making this promotion available to conventional grocery stores across the country, featuring the same recipes and up to $3 in savings on Horizon Organic butter. More recipes, coupons and details of the promotion can be found at www.bakeitorganic.com.

"Baking is a holiday tradition in many households. Our promotion offers families a delicious organic alternative," said Clark Driftmier, senior vice president of marketing, Horizon Organic. "By partnering with other organic foods companies, we are able to offer valuable savings and recipes giving consumers the opportunity to try and share organic seasonal fare with friends and family."

-30 percent of annual baking sales occur in November and 40 percent in December

-85 percent of Americans say baking helps put them in the holiday spirit

-Six out of 10 consumers say holiday baking is more enjoyable than holiday shopping

-Of those who give baked goods as gifts, 46 percent give cookies, 21 percent give pies or cakes and 15 percent give breads.

-Santa also benefits from home-baked gifts, with 30 percent of Americans leaving homemade cookies out for him

-The name eggnog has left scholars guessing as to its origin. While the "egg" portion seems to be a relatively straightforward descriptor, the "nog" portion has been argued to mean several things, including a derivative of the word "grog" describing the alcohol often added to the concoction. Others have described "nog" as the small, wooden mug the beverage was traditionally served in.
