PSEG Chairman Inaugurates Wind Farm in Chile
PSEG Wins Two EPA Awards
NEW JERSEY, NEWARK, Nov. 14 -/E-Wire/-- PSEG Chairman and CEO, E. James Ferland today inaugurated the Central Eolica Alto Baguales wind turbine project in Coyhaique, Chile and PSEG received two awards from the US EPA.
The wind project, which uses state-of-the-art wind turbine technology, will provide over 16 % of the electric needs of a rural area of Southern Chile. The three highly computerized units are the first wind projects in Chile and displace current diesel generation - helping to improve air quality. The project, which can generate up to 2 MW of electricity, will also lower costs for customers. The wind project was developed by Edelaysen, part of the SAESA group which joined the PSEG global network of companies in August.
Tonight, PSEG will received two awards for extraordinary accomplishments in reducing waste from the US EPA at a ceremony in Washington, DC.. PSEG will receive the Partner of the Year award for Large Businesses and an Electronics Challenge Partner of the Year award.
In being named Partner of the Year, The EPA cited PSEG's commitment to waste reduction, recycling, and buying recycled products in 2000 including: reusing 81.2 tons of furniture (saving $57,530) refurbishing 1,054 pounds of street lighting and a comprehensive computer waste recovery program. Through its Buy Recycled Policy, the company also purchased more than $2.7 million worth of recycled-content products-up 25 percent from 1999.
In being named Electronics Challenge Partner of the Year, the EPA highlighted PSEG's highly successful computer reuse and recycling programs. In 2000. PSEG reused 19 tons of computers, including donating nearly 13 tons of refurbished computers to local charitable organizations, schools, and community groups and selling more than 6 tons of computers and electronics equipment for reuse. PSEG also sent 200 computer systems to Pedals for Progress, a nonprofit corporation in Latin American. For those computers that could not be refurbished or reused, PSEG recycled 29 tons of computer components in 2000.
This is the second major national award received by PSEG this fall. In October, PSEG received the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Excellence in Business Leadership Award for Coastal and Ocean Resource Management for its Estuary Enhancement Program
