More Than Half of Homeowners Plan Improvements This Winter According to Chelsea Group

ILLINOIS, CHICAGO, Nov. 14 -/E-Wire/-- Despite poor economic news of late, more than one-half of US homeowners say they are planning to invest in home improvements this winter, according to the results of Chelsea Group's most recent installment in its ongoing nationwide survey of consumers perceptions of indoor air quality (IAQ).

"A significant proportion of those surveyed said their goals are to save money on energy and to improve the air quality in their homes. This is good news for the economy as these investments and related purchases drive so much of US business and indicate that although consumer confidence and spending is down, homeowners still see value in improving their homes,' said George Benda, chairman and CEO of Chelsea Group.

Of those participating in Chelsea Group's most recent survey of IAQ markets, 56.2% of homeowners and 64.1% of parents said that they plan home improvements or related purchases in the next six months, he said.

"These results are consistent with results of earlier Chelsea Group surveys that showed that overall concern for IAQ is at an all-time high and that a vast majority of homeowners are willing to spend their discretionary income to improve the quality of air in their homes. In fact, another recent installment found that only 4.1% of homeowners expressed no interest in purchasing products to improve the quality of air inside their homes, ' Benda said. "It is significant that even though there has been a economic downturn homeowners' and parents' interest in improving the quality of air inside their homes remains strong,' he added.

Additional results and perspective can be obtained from Briefing 2002, a detailed presentation of the results of Chelsea Group's ongoing national opinion research and leadership surveys on IAQ issues. The presentation also provides insights into market factors relating to indoor air quality in a context that facilitates strategic analysis and application to product management process.

During the October 2001 survey, 1,000 adults were interviewed by telephone over a three-day period by Market Facts. Participants were selected from all available residential telephone numbers in the contiguous United States, using a random sampling technique. Market Facts, based in Arlington Heights, IL, is an international market research consulting company.
