Large Independent Oil and Gas Company to Use New Paradigm's "Green" Desulphurisation Biotechnology

First North American application of "sulphur eating" microorganisms to process sour gas

TEXAS, HOUSTON, Nov. 29 -/E-Wire/-- CCR Technologies Ltd. today announced one of the largest independent oil and gas companies in Canada will use a biological gas desulphurisation process under license from New Paradigm Gas Processing Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of CCR Technologies, to sweeten sour gas at a facility in Southern Alberta.

The technology utilizes naturally occurring Thiobacillus organisms to purify natural gas to sales specifications by converting H(2)S to solid, fertilizer grade sulphur. The process eliminates the need for continuous flaring and virtually eliminates hydrogen sulfide emissions from sour gas facility vents.

Under the terms of the agreement, the company, which has widespread natural gas operations throughout Alberta, has acquired a site-specific license for the New Paradigm biotechnology and will retrofit an existing facility with the proprietary bioprocess. Start up of the new technology is scheduled for May 2002. Financial terms of the licensing agreement were not released.

The agreement follows a lengthy public consultation process with landowners and surrounding occupants, which resulted in unanimous support for the green technology and the proposed project. The community's endorsement of the project facilitated approval of the customer's submission to the Alberta Energy Utilities Board (AEUB) in less than ten days.

"This licensing agreement marks an important step forward for the energy industry in using alternative technologies to optimize economics and address health, safety and the environment," commented Bud Bell, President and Chief Executive Officer of CCR Technologies, in announcing the licensing agreement. "It is gratifying to have a leading company in the industry embrace this innovative new approach to sour gas development. We look forward to seeing the technology at work next year," he continued.

"Hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) is one of the most significant and controversial environmental issues facing sour gas developers and the surrounding land owners and occupants," commented Todd Beasley, Vice President of CCR's New Paradigm Gas Processing subsidiary. "This technology addresses the issue in a safe, efficient and economically compelling manner by completely eliminating the need for a continuous gas flare or source of combustion," he explained.

About the Technology

Scientists first became aware of the significance of naturally occurring sulphur-converting microorganisms through the discovery of deep-sea hydrothermal vents, several kilometers below the ocean's surface. These types of organisms, found virtually everywhere on earth, have since been identified as one of the primary reasons the earth is able to sustain biological life.

In 1992, Shell Global Solutions International B.V., together with Paques Bio Systems in Holland commercialized a breakthrough gas treatment technology utilizing sulphur-converting microorganisms. More than 20 commercial systems have been installed worldwide by Shell International Oil Products B.V. and Paques Bio Systems to treat gas in a variety of applications. CCR's subsidiary, New Paradigm Gas Processing is the authorized licensor of the technology in Canada. The licensing agreement marks the first time the technology has been used in Canada.
