Senator Levin Urges Use Of Private Organizations In Fight Against Terrorism

MICHIGAN, DETROIT, Dec. 12 -/E-Wire/-- Dave Usher, president of the Detroit-based Spill Control Association of America, commended Senator Carl Levin (D-Michigan), for recognizing the value and importance of using private companies and organizations which are experts in pollution control in the fight against terrorism.

Usher, referring to Senator Levin's statement to the Governmental Affairs Committee that held hearings on the local role in homeland security, said:

"Senator Levin made a vital observation in urging government to use private companies in organizations in response to terrorist attacks which might include biochemical terrorism.

"We have the expertise to help contain damage but also to train government personnel. We are involved in helping control damage from a variety of accidents almost everyday. We have tremendous resources that should be used." Usher is also president of world-renowned Marine Pollution Control, of Detroit, as well as a member of the Marine Response Alliance.

In his testimony, Levin said, while the government's role is indisputable, he added:

"Ҁ¦it is crucial that private companies are also consulted. My staff recently met with an association based in Detroit that represents independent pollution spill response companies across the U.S.

"They offered to provide their expertise and help to train local officials in remediation including chemical and biological hazards. Yet, they were unsure where to go to offer their assistance.

"The point is: we have private resources here that should not be overlooked. Many citizens tell me that they desperately want to help their country in some way besides spending money, and private companies may offer a way for citizens to help in what they may see as a more tangible way."
