GMP Offers New Web-Based Tool To Help Customers Control Electric Bills

VERMONT, COLCHESTER, Jan. 3 -/E-Wire/-- Green Mountain Power (NYSE: GMP) has developed a free online energy management tool system that offers large potential savings for residential customers. For the first time, residential customers will be able to use the web to apply energy management tools in their own houses.

The energy management system is offered as part of Green Mountain Power's new web site at greenmountainpower.biz. The analysis tool is available to anyone, and for Green Mountain Power's own customers there is a link that allows comparisons with their own bills.

"The technology we have employed with this system gives customers a great opportunity to understand and manage their own energy demands," said Todd Julius, Green Mountain Power's chief technology and customer solutions manager. "More than 70 percent of our residential customers are on line and that means they now have access to detailed management information that they can use to make decisions about their energy use."

With the My Home system, Green Mountain Power customers can assess their own electricity use, room by room. They can add and take away appliances and measure the impact of each one on their total usage and on their monthly bills. They can compare past and future energy profiles for their homes, and calculate the short- and long-term cost of adding or subtracting various energy components. Rooms can be added and furnished. For example, My Home shows that a dehumidifier running 12 hours a day can add as much as $18 to a monthly bill. Customers can adjust the number of hours an appliance runs to control the monthly bills in the web analysis, and then in their homes.

"This auditing system complements the work that the state-wide efficiency utility, Efficiency Vermont, does to help customers use energy efficiently," said Mr. Julius. "We have found that customers are concerned about the economy and are looking for ways to reduce their own costs. Green Mountain Power has made a commitment to use the advanced technology that is now available to improve service to our customers and to put them in charge of their own energy future."

The My Home system has been designed not only to let customers engineer their own energy patterns, but to make the job fun. "My Home is a point-and-click design system that moves as fast as your modem allows and is as flexible as your own creativity," Mr. Julius said. "It is easy enough to use that we expect elementary schools to incorporate it into their energy curriculum."

The My Home program is also available for non-customers and schools to use without the link to individual bills.

The new Green Mountain Power web site went up in late December. Besides the new My Home feature, it has a full menu of links to services, information, individual customer accounts, energy education programs, and safety tips. Customers can access their own accounts to review usage, billing and payment history, as well as change the estimate for the next bill.
