FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
How Do You Grow Hat Yuans Rather Than Hat Rins?
NEW YORK, NEW YORK, Jan. 15 -/E-Wire/-- Worldsurface.com was born on the beach of Hat Yuan in Ko Pha Ngan, Thailand. Hat Yuan is one of the many underdeveloped bays on an island dominated by the traveller beach resort of Hat Rin. The question: Given the continuing global growth in the popularity of backpacking, how do you grow Hat Yuans rather than Hat Rins?
On Monday January 14, worldsurface.com officially launches worldsurface.com version 3. This website is our attempt to answer that question.
Worldsurface.com is an online travel guide written by travellers for travellers, that has sustainable and ecotourism at its core. Instead of ecotourism being restricted to specialist sites and preaching to the convertedâ, at worldsurface.com it is as much as part of travelling as visaâs and passports are. Worldsurface.com is a collaboration between 3,000 independent travel writers, 40 national tourist authorities, 100 sustainable tourism operators, airlines, hotels, hostel operators and travel guide publishers. It is an online guide to a world where travelling with the right trekking company is as important as travelling with the right currency.
To celebrate the launch of version 3, worldsurface.com is also announcing the winners of its Second Global Reporter Competition. Every 6 months worldsurface.com funds 10 of its volunteer writers and photographers to travel the world and report on the development of sustainable tourism for the site. In 2001, Worldsurface.com funded travellers to cycle around Iceland, eat out of a cow's stomach in China and teach English at a primary school in India. In 2002 winning members will visit a volunteer school in Guatemala City, a National Park in Venezuela and community tourism projects in Namibia.
Worldsurface.com is a next generation internet start up. A small company, we value our independence and recognize that profit funds independence. Between us, we have cycled from Texas to the southern tip of Chile, watched the sun rise over the Taj Mahal and explored Mayan ruins in the rain forests of Guatemala. Within our core team we have 15 years of Travel Agency experience, CFO experience, Wall Street experience and we have 7 years experience of building databases, intranets and internets. We have CIMA memberships, a Masters Degree in Contemporary Philosophy and 3 PADI Licenses. We have started one company and assisted in the senior management of another.
Worldsurface.com has no debts and no venture capital funding. We are a small self-funded internet company. This is to ensure that if you are a responsible trekking company in Chiang Mai you can afford to advertise to a global community of travellers. We have a unique pricing structure for our ecotour operators. No charge for the initial tour, $50 for the second and $100 for any additional tours. This means that revenues from the larger more successful ecotour operators, and from airline, hotel and hostel commissions, fund grass roots ecotour development. As our site is written by travellers who review this grassroots development, we ensure that this development is responsible and sustainable.
