EZConserve Introduces Energy-Saving Software Tool

A select group of evaluation partners – including the City of Portland and

Portland Public Schools – will receive the first-generation software

OREGON, PORTLAND, Jan. 28 -/E-Wire/-- U.S. businesses spend over $1.6 Billion every year, according to research from Lawrence Berkeley National Labs, to power PCs that no one is using. Portland-based software maker EZConserve has released the first version of a solution that ends this energy waste, the Surveyor energy management program for PC networks. At the same time two local organizations – the City of Portland and Portland Public Schools – have agreed to launch independent evaluation programs for Surveyor, with field trials aimed at determining the product's suitability for use throughout their extensive PC networks.

Computers left running over extended periods of inactivity, at night, and on weekends are responsible for 24 billion kilowatt-hours of energy waste each year in U.S. businesses. While Energy Star initiatives have to some degree automated shutdown and energy reduction in newer PCs and monitors, this loss persists: recent studies have shown that as many as 75% of computer users disable their Energy Star features completely. Surveyor solves these problems by synchronizing the power management settings of an organization's PCs through a network-centralized interface. Settings that in the past have been determined by each individual computer user can now be determined as part of an organization-wide energy management policy. Surveyor makes routine checks of the power settings in use on each PC to insure that they are adhering to the energy management profile that has been set up by the organization. Systems can be automatically shut off or sent into a "hibernate" mode at night and over weekends, while still allowing users to have some control over their power settings during working hours. The system also provides reports on overall power consumption and costs, acting as an energy watchdog on the network and establishing control over an energy demand that can reach twenty-five percent of an organization's total electrical consumption. The Department of Energy has estimated that a solution like Surveyor, when deployed in an organization with 1000 PC-using employees, would save over $26,000 in energy costs each year.

Charged with the task of finding and evaluating efficiency tools that might be put to use throughout the City of Portland, Office of Sustainable Development senior energy manager Curt Nichols is eager to put Surveyor through its paces. "In spite of our best efforts, some computer equipment is left on when it doesn't need to be. That results in additional energy use…and higher power bills. We're looking forward to testing EZConserve's Surveyor and seeing what kind of impact it has." A successful evaluation with the Office of Sustainable Development could lead to Surveyor being installed throughout the city's network of over 4,000 PCs.

Version 1.1 of Surveyor supports Windows 2000 clients and servers running on either Windows or Novell networks. Follow-on versions are under development that will provide support for Windows XP, NT, 98SE, and 95 clients and servers. EZConserve expects the first of these follow-on versions to be available for broad North American release in Q2 of 2002.
