FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Synagro Receives Technology Award

HOUSTON, TEXAS, Jan. 29 -/E-Wire/-- Synagro Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ SmallCap: SYGR), one of the Country's leading independent providers of residuals management services, announced today that it is the recipient of a 2001 Technology Merit Award presented by the Environmental Business Journal. The company has received recognition for the anaerobic digester pilot facility it developed with AnAerobics Wastewater Treatment Company. Located in Chino Valley, California, the project is the result of a private/public partnership with Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA), a wastewater treatment and wholesale water utility, the Milk Producers Council, Synagro, and AnAerobics. Within a 50 square mile radius, the area has the highest concentration of dairies in the world. Providing a solution to the dairy waste management problem, the anaerobic digestion facility processes the daily manure generated by approximately 3,750 dairy cows. IEUA will use a portion of the biogas (methane) produced from the digester as supplementary fuel to run two generators powering the Chino Basin Desalter Facility with the remaining methane being used to run microturbines, generating electricity on site.

The United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service and the California Energy Commission jointly funded the project. This is one of the largest commercial systems in the United States to convert dairy manure into renewable energy.
